Vivo Surgery

During the pandemic, medical students at McMaster University lost access to operating rooms, and surgeons who wanted to learn a new procedure had no way to watch one. Neurosurgeon Dr Aleksa Cenic and Phillip Mohabir, who had spent over fifteen years in digital roles including leading IMAX's expansion abroad, started Vivo Surgery to fix that.

The platform streams a secure, high-definition, multi-camera view from the operating theatre, including a head-mounted camera, to remote learners who can put questions to the surgeon in real time. More than a dozen McMaster surgery professors have used it, and the livestreams have reached learners in fourteen countries.

Based in Ontario, the company now also combines video from several surgical devices into synchronised recordings and is building AI tools for surgical training, documentation and quality, with a clinical deployment at Hamilton Health Sciences beginning in neurosurgery in 2026.
